Baker Hughes, an INTERNATIONAL oil services giant is set to open a huge waste treatment plant on the edge of a Buchan town. The plant, dubbed the Peterhead Eco Centre, will be used to treat offshore drilling equipment, with all water, oil and drill cuttings produced during the process recycled or disposed of. The development will also house a research centre to look at new technologies designed to reduce the environmental impact of the oil and gas drilling industry. About a dozen full-time jobs are expected to be created when it opens on June 23.

Plans for a multi-million pound retail development in Northern Ireland at Sprucefield is set to begin today after months of delays. The Planning Appeals Commission probe into the £150m John Lewis-anchored development outside Lisburn has been beset by delay due to disagreements over the filing of documentation. The anchor department store would be the first John Lewis in Ireland. Supporters say up to 2,000 jobs would be created at the new development.

British Gas has announced it will create 80 new jobs in the summer at a new insulation depot in Coventry. The new base at Prologis Park, which is due to open in early July, is the fourth of 12 new depots opening across the country in the next year. The full-time positions, which are part of a drive to recruit 1,100 workers across the UK, were created as part of the firm's bid to lead the country's 'new energy' revolution. Graham Aylott, policy officer at the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "This is positive news for the city, particularly the north."

Tesco has announced a new supermarket is set to bring 450 jobs to Teesside. Tesco says its new "eco-store" at Low Grange Farm, off the A1085 Trunk Road at South Bank, will create 450 jobs in store, with half guaranteed for the long-term unemployed. Tesco also plans to build 11 adjoining retail units and offer them to businesses to let.

Fashion retailer Primark has announced it is moving into the former home of Woolworths in Cwmbran after signing a 25-year lease. Cwmbran Shopping Manager, Gerry Hutchings, said: "This is wonderful news for the town, particularly given the difficult economic climate, and we're delighted to be announcing the new store. The news is a welcome boost to the local economy." Torfaen council said the company will create 50 full-time and 20 part-time jobs at the new store.

The expansion of Diageo's multimillion-pound bottling plant has begun, it was announced today. Production at the site in Fife will increase to around 30 million cases a year and the work is said to be creating more than 400 new jobs. An estimated 150 jobs will also be created for the plant's construction, building firm Rok said.

UP to 40 new jobs could be created as the Wednesbury Ikea store gets set for a multimillion pound expansion. The store, just off the M6, has put in an application to build an 8,200 sq ft extension to the eastern side of the store, to increase the size of the restaurant, lobby and to provide more area for stock.

A huge windfarm will create hundreds of jobs for North Wales people. Some 160 turbines will be built at Gwynt y Môr off the Llandudno coast. It will take 1,000 people to build them and hundreds more to maintain them.

1,250 jobs will be created after the replacement of an eyesore shopping centre was been given the go-ahead. The Newgate Shopping Centre in Newcastle's city centre will be demolished, along with the Quality Hotel which towers above it. A £100m scheme to replace the 1960s centre with new shops, offices and three hotels.
